Madrid,Spain’s capital city, is a place that can catch the unwary visitor if they have not learned of the very diverse weather patterns in this part of Spain beforehand.Madrid can be swelteringly hot in the summer months of July and August, but temperatures during winter time can plummet well below freezing, especially at night.
If you are planning a city break or a vacation to Madrid, learning about the weather at different times of the year can make or break your holiday; after all you want it to go as smooth as possible right?
The weather here in Madrid is so diverse it is unbelievable to some unless they come and visit the city during different times of the year.Madrid is a huge place and to properly see and appreciate it, a second, third, or even fourth visit is common.
Flights to Madrid arrive and depart with alarming frequency at the city’s Barrajas airport, to all corners of the country, all parts of Europe, and to farther afield such as the Americas. If you want to know what to do if the weather is good, or bad, here are a few suggestions.
Things to do in Madrid when it rains.
Rain in Madrid is not that common, apart from a small chance of rain during or before Easter, and the chance of rain during late autumn, September or October but due to it’s location and the surrounding terrain, rain is not a common feature, unlike back in the UK for example!
On rainy days you can escape underground, quite literally, into the city’s Metro system and take a train journey to some of the museums and art galleries that are dotted around the city, the most famous being the Museo del Prado, which contains a display collection of over 7000 internationally renowned works of art, including ones from the countries best known artists such as Picasso, Goya and Salvador Dali.
Things to do in Madrid when it snows.
Snow is Common in Madrid during winter but it rarely settles and is rarely any deeper than an inch or two during the worst times, however if you love snow, then any time of the year you should head about 20 kms out of Madrid to the Xanadu Shopping centre, one of the largest in Europe.
Xanadu centre is located in Arroyomolinos, 20km from Madrid, and situated next to the A-5 Autovia. It is packed with bars, shops, restaurants and other leisure facilities to enjoy no matter what weather it is outside! The great thing about this place is that it is next to “SnowZone”, an 18,000m2 indoor ski and snow boarding centre where people can enjoy a variety of winter sports, even in summer!
Things to do in Madrid when it’s hot and sunny.
Now you’re talking! Spain comes to life when the sun shines which, regardless of the seasonal climate and temperatures, is quite a common thing, so when it’s hot and sunny, there is no excuse to stay in your hotel, but get out and about and see some sights in Madrid.
Madrid is full of parks of various sizes so get yourself a tourist map of the city and go and explore!
One of the great things about Madrid when the weather gets hotter is the fact that the evenings seem to draw the people out in droves and bars and shops stay open late, but in the intense august heat, don’t over do it as if you are not used to the climate and temperature, you could quickly dehydrate so drink plenty of water if you plan to be in Madrid during the hot months.
Above all,Madrid is an all year round and all weather destination that is packed with things to do and see!
